Areas of Work

Five pillars. One promise — free care.

Access Life provides families with accommodation, nutrition, transportation, counselling, recreation and educational support — all free of cost — while their children receive medical care at hospitals across India.

01 — Free & hygienic shelter

Accommodation
70% to 90% of childhood cancers are curable. Children battling cancer and without access to proper accommodation and nutrition are 5x more likely not to survive — due to secondary infections, chemotherapy intolerance and treatment abandonment.

Families coming to cancer hospitals from different parts of the country usually have no relatives or shelter in the city. Access Life offers them hygienic shelter, coupled with a stress-free environment and nutritional support — that gives our bravehearts an upper hand in their fight against cancer.

Access Life shelters the lives of more than 297 individuals every year.

02 — Stress-free hospital travel

Transportation
Our bravehearts have low immunity levels and using public transport exposes them to risk of infection that can hamper their recovery. Each family makes an average of four trips to hospital per week during treatment — stress-free transportation is a critical element of supportive care.

We currently operate 15 donated vehicles to facilitate free transportation comfortably, as families go to the hospital for investigations, chemotherapy, surgery and follow-up — during their stay with Access Life.

03 — Wholesome, free meals

Nutrition
Good nutrition is especially important in cancer treatment because both the illness and its treatment can affect the patient’s appetite and nutritional status.

At our centres, we provide food grains and nutritional supplements required for the children, and promote community cooking facilities at our housing accommodations — so that families can cook together, share meals and create a sense of home.

04 — Counselling, yoga, recreation

Emotional & Psychological Support
Access Life is also about Emotional and Psychological Support (EPS) programmes that facilitate healing and equip the children and their families with practical ways to deal with the distress created by the disease.

From yoga, nutrition and counselling sessions, to storytelling, craft, and recreational activities — every centre runs a calendar of activities. We also teach parents new skills that could be a source of livelihood when they return to their hometowns after their child’s long treatment.

05 — Continuing learning

Educational Support
Proper education is an integral part of stimulating the minds of the children and keeping them active. Our teachers and volunteers conduct a baseline assessment of each child’s education level and teach them Language, Maths, Environmental Science & General Knowledge.

We do not want a child to lose a school year because of their illness — and we work hard to keep them learning.

Help fund a pillar of care.

Every rupee directly powers a bed, a meal, a ride, a counselling session or a school lesson for a child in treatment.
